Feral Freq is the sound an animal makes before you see it. Say it fast and the name turns into a signal. Feral frequencies. The painting is a cat that will not be kept. It fills the canvas head-on, ears up, eyes too wide, already grinning before you decide whether the grin is a greeting or a warning. The head is brown on brown, the coat scratched in with the paint pen until it is more scribble than fur. Two pink ears stand at the top, lined in white. The eyes are big and blue and ringed in charcoal, open the way a wild thing looks when it has already heard you. A small pink nose sits between them. The mouth is a white grin full of red and black zigzag teeth, and the red runs down past the jaw in thin drips, so the smile bleeds a little at the edges. Behind the animal the dark is not empty. It is scratched all over with pale blue and white loops, the frequencies the title means, the static a feral thing lives inside. A tail curls up at the lower right like an antenna. One of the smaller canvases, in acrylic and paint pen. Another old god walking in from the dark, teeth already showing, and somehow still smiling.
