A Pack of Lips

The apocalypse arrives as a pack of animals, and they are smiling. A winged one watches from the night, the serpent takes the fire straight into its mouth, a crocodile ferries a small red devil across its back. The end of the world, painted as the oldest kind of company.

Imaginary Friends by tijo (2026), 150 × 120 cm acrylic and paint pen on linen. Four cartoon creature figures stand in a row against a dark violet ground beneath an enormous shadowy purple face with black almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and a long white crescent smile that arcs across the top of the canvas. Left: a tall cobalt-blue ghost-shaped figure with a pink scribbled tuft of hair, hollow pale-blue ringed eyes and a black-and-white grid of teeth; in front of it a small golden horned figure with glowing yellow eyes, a red zigzag grin, scribbled glyph-covered body and a blue flame-shaped drop above its head. Centre: a red-and-black cyclops figure with a single ringed eye and a mouth of long white fangs, raising one hand with an orange pentagram on the palm; QUANTUM, ENCRYPTION HACKING and LIFE AFTER DEATH are written in pale paint pen across its body. Right: a turquoise-green figure with orange eyes, blue brows, a pink zigzag-tooth grin and pale rib marks down its lower body. Every surface is worked with dense scribbled mark-making in paint pen.

Purrgatory by tijo (2026), 200 × 160 cm, painting on canvas. A neo-expressionist frontal cat face filling the entire canvas: a yellow and gold mane radiating outward in long strokes, edged by a continuous looping black scrawl; two large orange eye-masks holding half-closed eyes — white with blue half-moon pupils and single gold-stroke lashes; pink-lined triangular ears; a dark plum triangle nose; and a monumental grin of two rows of thick white squares set in an orange lattice framed in gray, spanning nearly the full width. Black whisker strokes scratch across a light green panel and an ochre panel on either side of the mouth.
